Citrix Tool for Cloning Presentation Server/XenApp 4.0 and 4.5 PDF Print
Written by Joe Shonk

Did you know that Citrix has a tool that can help you clone Presentation Servers/XenApp 4.0/4.5?

It was developed by Pete Downing and friends to integrate XenApp with Provisioning Server.  Specifically to allow XenApp to work with PVS’s standard image mode.  If think about it, every time you stream a XenApp standard image it’s exactly like cloning a server.

The tool makes all the necessary changes you need to make in order to properly clone a Presentation Server/XenApp.  This includes changing the STA ID which they don’t tell you in the original Admin Guide.

1) Download and install the tool on your XenApp image

2) Run the integration icon the tool places on the Desktop

3) Run Sysprep to reseal the OS and shutdown the server

4) Use your favorite tool to deploy the Image

5) Run through the Sysprep wizard

6) Add the server to the Domain (if applicable and not done through the Sysprep wizard)

7) Use Add/Remove programs to remove the PS PVS integration tool

8) Set the following Citrix Services to Automatic (the tools changes them to manual):

           Citrix Independent Management Architecture

           Citrix SMA Service

           Citrix XML Service

I’ve been using this method for customers who prefer imaging/cloning vs the more flexible (and more complicated) layered approach and it works like a charm. If you prefer a layered approach, I would suggest using one of my PS/XA 4.0 or 4.5 installation scripts.

The Citrix PS PVS Integration Tool can be found here .  Oh, and it also works great with Provisioning Server too. Thanks Pete!

Pete and other guys in Engineering have made a better tool which automates the
above process. We will be releasing that tool soon via blogs

Vishal,
Any update on releasing that updated tool? WOuld be happy to talk about
it when I teach PVS, as well as when I am out on projects.

Hi Robert
I would be more than happy to share details with you when we release
the tool. This week we plan to do a Screencast which will show how the tool
works. I will update this comment when I post the screencast via Citrix blogs

This tool sounds good but sysprepping a Presentation Server with re-mapped
drives doesn't work - it garfs up the MSGINA at logon.

I have a fairly
automated cloning process with scripts that make most of the necessary
modifications on the Presentation Server clone including the STA.

The STA is the Secure Ticket Authority. However this is part of the
authenticaton process for WI/CSG not sure why it comes up specifically with the
cloning process.

Can anyone explain to me what the STA ID is used for? What kind od issues might
one expect to see if multiple servers have the same ID (as in my current farm
where I have 24 servers all cloned from the same image)? This is the first I've
ever even heard of the setting or the file that contains it. I have checked my
servers and sure enough it is there and they are all the same ID. A search of
the Citrix web site does not even find the term? Also never seen mention of it
in Doug Brown's MIAB documentation.

I'd definately be interested in learning
more.

The STA ID is used by the XML service and is the unique identifier for the
XenApp server when its used with Secure Gateway (SG) or Access
Gateway (AG). There's a CTX article that talks about this at http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX108361.

If anyone is interested in the new tool Vishal has mentioned, I've
written a blog about this at http://shannonma.wordpress.com/2008/07/08/cloni.... Feel free to check it out and let me know if you have any questions,
comments, or feedback.

Dear All,

I've released a tool in the same spirit but with a little GUI and
also integrated with the Provisionning Server Client.

You may want to give it
a try.

You can download it from http://www.citrixtools.net

Any feedback is
welcomed.

Best Regards,

Pierre

Pierre,

Great job on the Cloning tool and GUI plugin. Very slick stuff. With
PVS, it is a slam Dunk.

Thanks for your efforts.

CARLO.

Vishal,

Any update on the release of the official tool?
Shannon Ma     |2008-08-06 05:54:50
Hi Brian,

I'm addressing some feedback from the internal beta tests. It will
be released by the end of August. I'll post a link to it on my blog once it's
online.
